PHILIA SCHOOL · PETRÓPOLIS, BRAZIL

The first lesson is
not a word, but a
gesture of attention.

PHILIA SCHOOL is a permanent educational project in development in Petrópolis, Brazil. It brings children into contact with design, craft, art and the living intelligence of materials through experiences rooted in observation, experimentation and collective making.

01 — THE SCHOOL

A school that begins
with making.

Children today have access to more information than ever before. But information alone does not teach someone how to meet the world, understand it or transform it.

This requires attention: the ability to notice what is already there. It requires imagination: the freedom to see what might be possible. It requires patience, courage and the willingness to learn from what does not work.

Time to look.
Space to explore.
Materials that respond.
Trust enough to try.

02 — THE FIRST CHAPTER

PHILIA
LAB

PHILIA LAB is the experimental programme from which PHILIA SCHOOL is growing.

Launched in Petrópolis in 2026, it transforms a single creative encounter into a continuous journey. Its first material is wood, but its purpose reaches far beyond woodworking.

The school does not arrive fully formed before the experience. It takes shape through it.

03 — OUR APPROACH

An idea changes
when it meets
the world.

Every PHILIA project moves through a living cycle. Children observe before deciding, imagine before limiting what might be possible, experiment before searching for a final answer and build with an openness to change.

01

OBSERVE

Create space between seeing and responding.

02

IMAGINE

Allow other possibilities to appear.

03

EXPERIMENT

Give an idea the freedom to change.

04

BUILD

Bring intention, technique and material into dialogue.

05

SHARE

Place what has been made in relation to others.

06

REFLECT

Recognise decisions, difficulties and discoveries.

07

TRANSFORM

Notice what has changed in the object, the context and oneself.

04 — MATERIAL

“Material is a silent teacher.
It does not explain.
It responds.”

Wood has grain, weight, direction, scent, marks and time. It does not answer every gesture in the same way. It asks the child to look again, adjust an intention, respect a limit or discover an unexpected possibility.

05 — TERRITORY

Petrópolis is not
the backdrop.
It is part of the school.

Its forests, workshops, materials, histories and human relationships enter the learning process. The city extends the workshop. Nature becomes a field of observation.

Help us give the project
time to grow.

PHILIA SCHOOL is being built through a shared commitment to childhood, creativity and the future of a territory.
